Donald Trump has shifted from a cautious, distanced stance to offering full and unconditional support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming Israeli parliamentary election on October 27. While Trump previously declined to endorse Netanyahu in interviews with TIME magazine, stating, ‘I’m not involved in politics anymore,’ he has since used Truth Social to issue a ‘complete and total endorsement’ of the Prime Minister. Trump described Netanyahu as a ‘great warrior prime minister’ and a ‘brilliant leader,’ characterizing him as a vital partner for the United States in confronting Iran. On the eve of the election, Netanyahu has heavily campaigned on this relationship, claiming an ‘unprecedented friendship’ with Trump. Following Trump’s urge for Israelis to vote for Netanyahu to ‘finish the job’ regarding Iran, Netanyahu asserted he has already instructed the Mossad and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to work toward bringing down the Iranian regime, suggesting renewed military action could occur if he remains in power. As the October 27 vote approaches, polls indicate a technical tie between Netanyahu’s Likud party and centrist challenger Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party, with neither bloc positioned to secure a 61-seat majority. Eisenkot, a former IDF Chief of Staff, is campaigning on national unity and the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the October 7, 2023, security failures. While reports previously suggested tensions between Netanyahu and the IDF regarding potential military operations against Iran prior to the vote, Defense Minister Israel Katz has denied reports of a rift between the government and the IDF regarding military strategy. Netanyahu has dismissed claims that he sought a joint military strike with the US against Iran before the elections as ‘nonsense.’ As the election nears, the race remains a tight contest between Netanyahu and Eisenkot.
