Reports from late September and early October 2026 highlight several separate incidents of dowry-related deaths and subsequent arrests in India. In Pune, a 23-year-old IT professional, Vaishnavi Pravin Jarande, died by suicide following alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws. Her family reported that despite spending approximately 45 lakh rupees and 10 tolas of gold on the wedding, the husband and his parents demanded an additional 5 lakh rupees for a car. Police have arrested the husband and his parents. Further investigations in Pune revealed another suicide on September 29 involving 33-year-old IT engineer Trishna Rahul Sakpal. Her father filed a First Information Report (FIR) against five family members, including her husband, Rahul Sakpal, alleging mental cruelty and dowry harassment. The complaint states the deceased was pressured to hand over her entire salary and was subjected to demands regarding the transfer of property, including a flat for her mother-in-law and a one-crore rupee flat for her father-in-law. In a suicide note, she reportedly wrote, ‘My in-laws are responsible for my death. I cannot bear any more.’ In Odisha, Golanthara Police arrested 36-year-old Manas Ranjan Dakhinakabat following the death of his wife, Ambrita Priyadashini Rauta. The victim reportedly died from injuries sustained during a domestic assault on September 23. Her father alleged that ongoing physical and mental harassment occurred due to demands for additional dowry, despite various items and cash being provided during their 2020 marriage. Charges including cruelty, dowry death, and culpable homicide have been registered.
