DP World green logistics expansion in Romania

Overview

In July 2026 DP World and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed a green loan of up to €25 million to fund the electrification of the Constanța South Container Terminal in Romania. The financing, part of a broader €100 million programme, will replace diesel‑powered equipment with electric alternatives, install shore‑power connections, and upgrade the terminal’s electrical infrastructure, targeting a reduction of more than 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.

A few weeks later, in August 2026 DP World completed its first intermodal rail shipment of finished vehicles from Zeebrugge, Belgium, to Aiud, Romania, launching an end‑to‑end rail corridor. The Aiud multimodal logistics terminal, opened in 2024, will serve as a regional automotive distribution hub with twice‑monthly services planned and possible extensions to other European ports. DP World expects the rail‑road service to cut CO₂ emissions by up to 55 % compared with long‑haul road transport and to provide greater cost certainty. Together, the electrification of the Constanța terminal and the new rail corridor illustrate DP World’s strategy to build a greener, more connected logistics network in Romania and the wider region.
