In early July 2026, two separate fire incidents highlighted fire‑safety challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The following day, a bush‑fire in Mukolo, Demba territory destroyed two homes, again without fatalities but leaving families displaced and underscoring the heightened fire risk during the dry season.

Later in July, attention shifted to chronic pollution linked to oil production. Human Rights Watch reported that Perenco, the sole oil producer in the country, was responsible for frequent gas flaring, waste burning, and oil spills in the Kongo‑Central province. Residents near the sites, especially in Muanda, experienced elevated rates of respiratory illness, prompting calls for an immediate release of an environmental audit ordered by the Congolese government in December 2024. The report emphasizes ongoing health and environmental concerns tied to the oil sector.
