Former BioWare lead writer David Gaider continues to warn that no new Dragon Age installments are likely while EA owns BioWare. The 2024 release *Dragon Age: The Veilguard* sold about 1.5 million copies in its first three months—roughly half of EA’s internal target and far below the 12 million of *Inquisition*. The shortfall prompted staff cuts and a shift toward the next Mass Effect project, limiting capacity for further Dragon Age work. Gaider describes the franchise as “always one breath away from being shelved” and says a revival would require a darker, risk‑taking fantasy RPG outside EA’s control. Former executive producer Mark Darrah echoed these concerns in July 2026, noting that EA’s multi‑executive approval process and hedge‑fund‑like financial mindset hinder green‑lighting new titles. He reiterated that a remastered trilogy of the original games is effectively impossible: BioWare no longer has staff who understand the Aurora Engine used for the first two games, the third title was built on a different platform, and EA is unlikely to devote a dedicated team to such a project. The fragmentation External studios also lack the expertise to work with the Aurora Engine, and the commercial under‑performance of *The Veilguard* further reduces EA’s appetite for a large‑scale Dragon Age remaster. Fragmentation across Aurora, Lycium and Frostbite engines further complicates any unified remaster effort. compounds the technical challenges. Gaider is meanwhile developing an independent balloon‑based heist RPG at Summerfall Studios, underscoring the broader challenge of funding indie projects in a risk‑averse market.
