DRC infrastructure development and financing

Overview

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is advancing several initiatives to address national infrastructure deficits. The government is planning a 90-kilometer, six-lane highway to connect the Kasumbalesa dry port, Lubumbashi, and the Kambove mining basin to facilitate the transport of copper and cobalt.

This highway project builds on a 2023 agreement with the South African company Yellowstone, which is also involved in a $599.9 million concession for the Kasumbalesa dry port. Construction for the port partnership is scheduled to begin in January 2027.

To support broader national needs, the DRC is also proposing the establishment of a development bank. Presented by Infrastructure and Public Works Minister John Banza Lunda, the institution aims to structure technical, legal, and financial project frameworks to attract long-term public and private capital. This initiative seeks to improve project bankability to address gaps in the country’s road network, electricity access, and water services.
