Overview

An explosive-laden drone detonated near the Kardam border crossing between Bulgaria and Romania, approximately 100 meters inside Bulgarian territory. The explosion occurred in a sunflower field near compressor stations of the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, a critical energy corridor connecting Turkey to Ukraine. No injuries, fatalities, or damage to infrastructure were reported.

Bulgarian defense officials identified the wreckage as likely being a "Maya" type drone, specifically a decoy model used by the Ukrainian military. Both Bulgarian and Romanian radar systems failed to detect the aircraft, a failure attributed to its small size, low altitude, and potential electronic warfare interference.

The incident has prompted significant diplomatic and security responses. Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Olesya Ilastchuk to demand an explanation. While the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated they are cooperating with authorities, they maintained that the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not intentionally direct the drone toward Bulgaria.

In response to the breach, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev convened an extraordinary Security Council meeting. Bulgaria has announced it will raise the incident at the North Atlantic Council to address concerns regarding air defense capabilities and the security of NATO’s southeastern flank.
