Following the official attribution of the August 4 hybrid attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, German authorities have identified two suspects involved in the drone incident. The first is a Belarusian citizen holding a Russian passport who entered the Schengen area using an Italian tourist visa. The second individual holds both Latvian and Russian passports and allegedly acted as a logistics coordinator and instructor. Investigators identified the suspects using DNA evidence found on a drone, an antenna, and an explosive-filled tin. The drones involved included one equipped with approximately 600 grams of explosives found near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft, and a second drone containing traces of military-grade Rdx discovered in a nearby field. German officials noted that the drone components, explosives, and detonation systems match patterns used in previous Russian hybrid operations. In retaliation, the German government announced it will close the Russian consulate in Bonn on September 18 and revoke the operating agreement for the Russian House in Berlin. Germany also plans to pursue additional EU sanctions against specific Russian individuals and intends to tighten immigration controls for Russian nationals. German officials emphasized that while the country is not in a state of war, it remains a target of ongoing hybrid warfare involving sabotage and disinformation. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident, while NATO and the European Commission expressed support for Germany. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the allegations, characterizing Germany’s retaliatory actions as a ‘serious mistake’ and calling the evidence unsubstantiated. The Russian Ambassador to Germany further described the current state of bilateral relations as being at a ‘freezing point,’ noting that most major areas of cooperation have been suspended.
