On the night of 5 August 2026 a drone suspected of carrying an explosive charge and a detonator was found near a ~~Ukrainian~~ Ukrainian‑operated Antonov cargo aircraft on the apron of Leipzig/Halle Airport. Federal, Saxon and state‑security units, supported by a bomb‑disposal robot, secured the device without detonation. A second suspicious object was later located on the southern runway, also appearing to contain a charge. The northern runway was cleared and reopened around 02:00 UTC, while the southern runway remained closed for further examination. Flights were diverted, including a Marabu passenger service to Nürnberg and numerous DHL cargo flights rerouted to Nürnberg, Hanover and other airports, causing significant disruption to the DHL hub. A DHL aircraft later struck an unidentified object after take‑off but landed safely in Hannover with minor front‑end damage. NATO confirmed the sighting and highlighted its security relevance. German federal police ~~are investigating~~ opened a counter‑terrorism investigation, led by Saxon prosecutors and German security services with NATO investigators involved, treating the incident as possible sabotage and a state‑security offence. No injuries were reported and normal operations resumed shortly after the initial shutdown.
