Following the August 4, 2026, explosive drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport targeting a Ukrainian Antonov An-124, Germany is accelerating security upgrades. The drone, which contained approximately 1.8 kg of Semtex, failed to detonate due to a faulty detonator. Investigators believe the attack could have caused a massive explosion, as the plane was carrying roughly 25,000 liters of jet fuel. Investigations have linked the Leipzig attack to the Russian military intelligence service, GRU, and expanded to include attacks on German electrical infrastructure, a construction site near Rohde & Schwarz in Munich, and an electrical substation near the Jänschwalde power plant. Secret documents identify Russian national Oleg L. as a primary logistics organizer and Belarusian national Andrei K. as a suspect. Investigators have since identified a third suspect, a Belarusian citizen. Oleg L. reportedly maintained contact for nearly 20 years with Denis Smoljaninov, a Russian military intelligence officer and EU-sanctioned sabotage expert. DNA evidence was recovered from a drone control antenna and an explosive-laden tin. Authorities noted that Oleg L. entered Germany via Turkey and departed through Berlin-Brandenburg toward Serbia; while he reportedly had known GRU ties, he was not under surveillance at the time. Investigators suggest the Semtex may have been smuggled into Germany through Bulgaria and Serbia, hidden within earth depots in truck cavities. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Federal Prosecutor's Office have labeled the incident a ‘Russian hybrid warfare operation’. This has triggered a severe diplomatic crisis. Germany has ordered the expulsion of approximately 150 Russian diplomats and announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin. In retaliation, Moscow has ordered the closure of the German Consulate in St. Petersburg and local branches of the Goethe Institute.
