Drone technology implementation in Japan
Overview
Japan is advancing the integration of autonomous drone technology across various industrial and social sectors.
In the aviation sector, Japan Airlines and French manufacturer Donecle have initiated testing of fully autonomous drones for aircraft exterior inspections at Haneda Airport. Using the Iris GVI drone, the project aims to replace high-altitude manual labor with high-resolution imagery to improve worker safety and maintenance efficiency.
Simultaneously, Japan Post and KDDI have launched a demonstration project in Suzu City to utilize post offices as drone ports. This initiative tests autonomous AI drones for infrastructure monitoring, school route surveillance, and emergency disaster response, such as assessing road damage and monitoring isolated communities. The partnership seeks to leverage the post office network to build a nationwide drone infrastructure by fiscal year 2027.
