Drought in Karnataka and relief disputes

In Karnataka, the state government has declared 101 taluks as drought-hit based on the ‘Drought Management Manual–2020’. Of these, 89 taluks are facing severe drought conditions, while 12 are experiencing moderate drought. Specific areas in the Chidurgu district, including Hiriyur, Challakere, and Hosadurga, were identified as severely drought-prone following three weeks of continuous dry weather.

Following this declaration, farmers and agricultural organizations have launched protests against the government for excluding certain areas from relief lists. In Vijayapura district, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha has expressed “strong indignation,” demanding that all 13 taluks be recognized as drought-hit, as only three—Vijayapura, Kolhar, and Nidagundi—were included. They have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar requesting immediate relief for severe crop damage.

In Jagalur, residents are protesting after the taluk was omitted from the official list. Reports indicate a failed monsoon has affected 196 villages, destroying crops such as maize, ragi, cotton, and sunflower, while causing falling groundwater levels and increased farmer debt.

The situation has escalated into a political dispute. Karnataka BJP President and MLA BY Vijayendra has accused the Congress-led government of “arbitrary and discriminatory practices,” claiming over 190 taluks are facing drought-like conditions. The controversy intensified following allegations from Congress MLA CS Appajigowda Nadagouda, who claimed the government intentionally excluded two taluks from his constituency. Vijayendra suggested these internal party disagreements highlight mismanagement and a lack of transparency.

BJP leaders, including Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and Vijayendra, further allege that the government is practicing political discrimination by including constituencies held by the ruling party while excluding those held by the Opposition. Additionally, Vijayendra claimed that authorities denied permission for a major BJP convention in Ballari, suggesting government pressure on the district administration.
