The Wupperverband has implemented water conservation measures in the Wuppertal and Bergisches Land regions due to a prolonged dry period. Following several months of below-average precipitation, the organization reduced water discharge from the Wuppertal reservoirs to approximately 3,000 liters per second at the Kluserbrücke gauge, a reduction of 14–15% intended to preserve supplies through September 2026. Conditions intensified in July 2026, which was recorded as the driest July since monitoring began at several stations. Rainfall levels in areas such as Hückeswagen and Leverkusen were significantly below historical averages. This lack of precipitation, combined with high sunshine hours and increased evaporation rates, has further strained the river ecosystem and reservoir capacities. By mid-August 2026, the situation necessitated further adjustments. The Wuppertalsperre reservoir reached a capacity of only 28 percent. In coordination with the Cologne District Government, the Wupperverband adjusted its strategy to ensure a minimum flow of 2,500 liters per second at the Kluserbrücke reference level. To compensate for the critically low levels in the Wuppertalsperre, the Bevertalsperre reservoir is being utilized more heavily.
