Drowning incidents in Indian river regions

Overview

Multiple drowning incidents have been reported in different regions of India involving both adults and minors.

In Jharkhand’s Palamu district, six people, including four minors, died during Karam Puja ritual immersions. In one instance in Bokaya village, five youths were swept away by strong currents in the Koel River while immersing tree branches. A separate incident in Nani Jharia resulted in the death of a 15-year-old who fell into a pond. Chief Minister Hemant Soren described the events as “extremely heartbreaking and distressing.”

In Bihar’s Bhojpur district, four people, including three minors, drowned in the Son River near Teerthkaul village. Local officials reported that the minors entered deep water while bathing, and a 25-year-old man died while attempting to rescue them. The State Disaster Response Force recovered the bodies, and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced ex-gratia payments for the families of the deceased.
