In Greece, authorities have responded to separate incidents involving narcotics distribution and large-scale trafficking. In Thessaloniki, a 22-year-old man was placed in pre-trial detention following the death of a 20-year-old woman from an MDMA overdose at a club. The suspect is accused of supplying the drugs to a 20-year-old male friend of the victim, who subsequently shared them with her. During a search of the suspect’s residence, police seized cannabis, MDMA, and precision scales. The suspect has denied distribution charges, stating he is a user. Authorities have since highlighted the extreme dangers of synthetic drugs, noting that users often consume substances of unknown chemical composition and origin. Concurrently, the Hellenic Coast Guard and Customs officials intercepted significant shipments at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in Athens. Using a drug-detection dog named ‘Mezkal’, officials found 2.235 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a wooden crate from Brazil. A separate shipment from the United States containing over 5 kilograms of skunk cannabis was also recovered. A 32-year-old Swedish national was arrested in connection with these shipments, which have an estimated black market value of more than 380,000 euros. Following a controlled delivery authorized by the prosecutor, the 32-year-old Swedish national was remanded in custody in Attica on October 14. The investigation revealed the cocaine was hidden within a ‘specially constructed compartment in the crate’s floor’. The total seizures from these operations include over 2.2 kg of cocaine and over 5.3 kg of hydroponic cannabis. In a further development in Thessaloniki, a 22-year-old woman was arrested at Macedonia Airport after being caught with over 18.5 kilograms of skunk cannabis arriving from Barcelona, Spain. She is suspected of being part of an international criminal organization using air travel to smuggle drugs into Greece.
