Law enforcement authorities in the Canary Islands have conducted major operations targeting international drug trafficking routes. In late August, Spanish National Police dismantled a heroin trafficking route and intercepted 21 kilograms of the substance in Gran Canaria. The operation, which authorities noted as the largest heroin seizure in Spain for 2026, led to the arrest of four individuals. The suspects had reportedly used separate travel arrangements to evade detection while attempting to move the drugs to mainland Spain. Additionally, police dismantled a distribution point in Maspalomas, seizing various substances including cocaine and ecstasy. By early September, the Guardia Civil intercepted a large-scale cocaine shipment approximately 70 nautical miles south of Gran Canaria. Authorities seized 3,360 kilograms of ~~cocaine~~ cocaine, organized into 139 bundles, from a high-powered vessel known as a ‘narcolancha’. During the interception, the vessel attempted to flee, resulting in a collision with a patrol boat. Five armed crew members were arrested, and officers recovered an assault rifle and a light machine gun on board, which were reportedly intended for defending the shipment against other criminal groups.
