Düsseldorf Airport is undergoing developments regarding its operational capacity and regional connectivity. In late August 2026, the airport submitted a proposal to reallocate existing flight quotas to favor commercial operations. While the total limit of 131,000 flight movements during the six busiest months remains unchanged, the plan seeks to increase the allowance for scheduled and charter flights to up to 128,000 movements. Additionally, the airport requested to raise hourly processing capacity from 47 to 60 take-offs and landings during dual-runway operation hours. This proposal has faced opposition from local residents concerned about noise pollution. Complementing these operational adjustments, the airport has improved its public transport integration Infrastructure improvements have also progressed with the introduction official launch of two new light rail lines, U80 and U81. Following a seven-year construction period costing approximately 336 million euros, the project includes a new U 80 subway line. This service 1.9-kilometer track section and an underground station at the airport terminal. The U80 line provides a direct connection between the airport terminal and the city center's main railway station and the airport terminal, (Hauptbahnhof) with a travel times time of approximately 18 minutes. The U81 line serves as a link between the airport, the Messe Düsseldorf exhibition grounds, and the Merkur Spiel-Arena during major events. The expansion was inaugurated by North Rhine-Westphalia Minister President Hendrik Wüst and Düsseldorf Mayor Stephan Keller, aiming to improve accessibility for passengers and international trade fair visitors.
