Dubai environmental conservation initiatives
Overview
The Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA) initiated a collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to develop a guide for managing natural reserves. This effort was announced as part of the preparations for the inaugural Dubai Environment Conference and Exhibition 2026.
Following the opening of the conference, the partnership evolved into an integrated management programme for Dubai’s eight nature reserves, encompassing marine, mountain, and desert environments. The programme aims to support the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. New initiatives introduced during the event include the Dubai Reef project, which plans to deploy 20,000 reef modules, and the use of artificial intelligence for environmental monitoring tasks such as biodiversity tracking and animal population counts.
