Director Duncan Jones has completed his long-term project to adapt the 2000 AD comic strip ‘Rogue Trooper’ into an R-rated animated science fiction film. The production, which Jones has been developing for over two decades, took more than four years to produce and utilized a combination of motion-capture, Unreal Engine 5, Maya, hand animation, and virtual production tools such as ‘The Volume’ to achieve a cinematic quality with a noted “video game-like aesthetic”. Following its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the film held Festival and its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Festival, the film has continued its festival circuit. Most recently, Jones returned to the Sitges Film Festival with the production. Set on the chemically poisoned planet Nu-Earth, the story follows a genetically engineered super soldier known as a ‘Genetic Infantryman’. The protagonist, G.I. 19, 19 (voiced by Aneurin Barnard), is the sole human survivor of a massacre and seeks to hunt down a traitor who betrayed his squad. He carries the digital consciousness of his three fallen comrades, which are embedded into his equipment, equipment as ‘bio-chips’, including his gun, helmet, and knapsack. The film features a British voice cast including Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, and Sean Bean. Jones noted that the original creators of the comic, Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, approved of the adaptation. Jones is currently seeking a theatrical distributor to secure a cinema release before the film transitions to streaming services.
