Dutch food supply chain preparedness recommendations

Overview

Researchers from the Clingendael Institute and Erasmus University, commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, have identified vulnerabilities in the Netherlands’ food supply chain. The studies indicate that the high efficiency of supermarket logistics and low inventory levels could lead to empty shelves within two to three days in the event of disruptions such as cyberattacks, extreme weather, or war.

To mitigate these risks, experts recommend that households increase their emergency food and water supplies from the previously suggested three days to eight days. Recommendations include stocking high-calorie, long-lasting, and ready-to-eat items, such as canned beans and corn, which can be consumed without cooking during power outages. Additionally, researchers noted a lack of practical, non-alarmist Dutch-language literature to assist citizens with everyday self-reliance and crisis management.
