As part of the ‘Week of Our Food’ and the National School Breakfast initiative, mayors across the Netherlands have been hosting breakfast sessions with primary school students. These events aim to promote healthy eating habits by providing nutritious meals aligned with the ‘Schijf van Vijf’ guidelines, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. Beyond nutrition, the initiative serves as a way for children to learn about food origins and local democracy. In some locations, students engaged with local producers to learn about dairy production or visited mayor’s offices to explore themes of citizenship. In October 2026, the annual ‘Burgemeestersontbijt’ (Mayors' Breakfast) took place from October 6 to October 9. During this period, mayors in municipalities such as Harlingen, Ommen, Winsum, and Middelharnis met with students to discuss nutrition and the functions of local government. These sessions featured products from local farmers and bakeries, including fresh milk, whole grain bread, and seasonal fruits. The breakfasts provided hands-on learning opportunities, such as discovering milk production or how to make butter, while offering a low-threshold way for children to engage with civic life. Specific local engagements included students from ‘t Wold primary school meeting with Mayor Bram Harmsma and local farmer Ester Beinum to discuss food origins. In Aalsmeer, students from IKC Triade joined Mayor Gido Oude Kotte and child mayor Julyanah Sitaram for a breakfast featuring yogurt and whole grain bread. While the ‘Burgemeestersontbijt’ concluded in early October, the initiative maintains focus through the National School Breakfast in November.
