Public sentiment in the Netherlands has shown significant dissatisfaction with the government’s approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict. An opinion poll indicated that only 11 percent of the population supports the current government policy, with 52 percent of respondents viewing the situation as apartheid and another 52 percent believing Israel is committing or has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Following these pressures, the Netherlands implemented a ban on the sale and purchase of goods originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. As Effective as of September 22, 2026, enforcement covers all imported items, including products partially produced in these areas and personal items such as souvenirs in travelers’ luggage. At Schiphol Airport, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee conducts additional baggage screenings for passengers arriving from Israel, specifically targeting items like wine, dates, and olives. Intentional circumvention of these rules can result in up to six years of imprisonment or substantial ~~fines, while~~ fines—with fines reaching up to 103,000 euros—while unintentional violations may lead to up to one year in prison. Relations have escalated following the implementation of the trade ban.
