Overview
Archaeologists in the Łódź Voivodeship have uncovered several graves dating to the early reign of the Piast dynasty in Kwiatkowice. The excavation, a collaborative effort involving the University of Łódź, the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź, and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, has examined ten graves.
The findings include both inhumation and cremation burials, which researchers suggest indicates a transitional period between pagan traditions and the rise of Christianity. Elite members appear to have been buried in stone constructions. Artifacts recovered include weaponry such as spearheads and axes in male graves, while female graves contained ornaments and glass bead necklaces. The orientation of the burials, with women facing east and men facing west, aligns with early medieval funerary customs.
