A polar air wave has brought early winter-like conditions to the Făgăraș Mountains in Romania. High-altitude areas, such as Bâlea Lac at over 2,000 meters, recorded temperatures below freezing and approximately 12 centimeters of snow. On the Transfăgărășan mountain road, snowfall occurred during the night of September 21–22, 2026. Authorities reported that heavy snowfall in the Bâlea Lac alpine zone required road maintenance, including the deployment of specialized vehicles and the use of over 5 tons of salt. While traffic remains normal, officials have warned that driving conditions resemble winter conditions due to potential ice and black ice. In lower regions like Câmpulung Muscel, temperatures have also dropped, with morning lows around 5°C. Meteorologists expect cold and unstable weather to persist in high-altitude areas, though temperatures are predicted to rise toward seasonal norms by the end of the week. As of September 23, winter conditions persist on the Transfăgărășan. DRDP Brașov and other road authorities continue to manage the roadway using machinery and salt to address snow depths of approximately 10 centimeters at Bâlea Lac. Similar weather shifts and snow have also been noted on the Transalpina route. Authorities strongly advise drivers to ensure vehicles are equipped with winter tires, chains, and shovels, and to check conditions before traveling.
