Earth inner core rotation changes

Overview

Seismic analyses of earthquakes recorded between 1991 and 2023 indicate that Earth’s solid inner core has slowed its rotation and begun rotating in the opposite direction of the mantle. Researchers found that the iron-nickel sphere rotated faster than the mantle until the early 2000s, but decelerated around 2010.

This shift is considered part of a natural 70-year geophysical cycle. While the change affects the length of a day by a few thousandths of a second, scientists state it has no direct impact on human activity and is primarily useful for understanding the dynamics of Earth’s magnetic field.
