East African Community economic integration efforts

The East African Community (EAC) is intensifying efforts to establish the East African Monetary Union (EAMU), with the goal of implementing a single regional currency by 2031.

Initial efforts focused on accelerating economic integration by reactivating the Capital Markets Sub-Committee in Arusha, Tanzania. This initiative aims to improve coordination between regulatory authorities, securities exchanges, and central securities depositories. Regional authorities also began reviewing measures to strengthen public finance management, align tax policies, and explore the creation of a joint East African Central Bank to ensure macroeconomic stability.

Subsequent developments emphasized the need for faster implementation of the EAMU Roadmap. Officials focused on improving budget credibility, enhancing expenditure controls to prevent arrears, and creating mechanisms for joint economic monitoring. Additionally, the EAC expanded its regional scope by agreeing to a structured partnership framework with four United Nations agencies—UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF, and the WHO—to align regional priorities with interventions for health and wellbeing.
