East Asian illegal gambling syndicate crackdowns

Law enforcement agencies in South Korea and Taiwan have dismantled large-scale illegal online gambling and money laundering syndicates.

In South Korea, the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Cyber Investigation Unit dismantled a syndicate that operated from November 2022 to July 2025. The group used YouTube live broadcasts with staged high-win scenarios and traffic manipulation programs to promote their services. Twelve members were arrested, including a domestic leader, while five members in Thailand are subject to Interpol Red Notices. Authorities seized evidence and moved to freeze approximately 3 billion won in criminal proceeds.

In Taiwan, police arrested 27 suspects involved in a syndicate that utilized a “work from home” model to evade detection. The group, led by a man surnamed Chen, transitioned from operating gambling machine rooms to a residential setup with dedicated departments for promotion and customer service. Investigators estimate the group handled over 3.76 billion TWD in illegal transactions over the past year. Authorities seized approximately 30.21 million TWD in illegal gains, along with cash, computers, and mobile phones.
