Ecological impact of invasive animals on isolated islands

Overview

The introduction of domestic animals to isolated islands has led to significant ecological shifts and biodiversity loss. On Great Island (Manawatāwhi) in New Zealand’s Three Kings group, four goats were introduced in 1889 to provide a food source for shipwrecked survivors. Without natural predators, the population grew to several hundred, causing severe environmental degradation through the heavy grazing of native vegetation.

This ecological damage resulted in the loss of nearly one-third of the island’s native forest bird species and threatened various plant populations, with some species never seen again after the late 19th century. The goat population was eventually eliminated through culling in 1946.

Similar patterns have been observed on Amsterdam Island in the southern Indian Ocean, where cattle introduced in 1871 grew to a population of approximately 2,000, providing researchers with data on how domestic species adapt to feral life.
