Pernambuco is experiencing diverse economic and cultural developments. In the first half of 2026, micro and small enterprises (MPEs) served as the primary drivers of formal job creation in the state, generating 21,790 new positions. This growth was most notable in the services and construction sectors, while medium and large companies saw a reduction in formal employment. Simultaneously, the state’s semi-arid regions have seen significant economic and cultural shifts. The São Francisco River valley has become a major agricultural hub, with fruit exports reaching approximately US$ 1 billion. Through scientific advancements, the region produces mangoes and grapes year-round, accounting for the vast majority of Brazil’s exports in these categories. Additionally, the Sertão do Pajeú region is seeking national cultural recognition for ‘Poesia do Pajeú’ following a project approved by the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. Recent economic projections for the state indicate varied growth trajectories. A study by Santander’s Economic Department forecasts a GDP growth of 1.6% in 2026 and 0.8% in 2027. The services sector, which accounts for 60.7% of the local economy, is expected to grow by 1.5% and 0.5% in those respective years. While these figures are lower than national averages, the industrial sector is projected to show resilience with growth of 1.9% in 2026 and 1.5% in 2027.
