Economic and innovation development in Northern Portugal

Northern Portugal is strengthening its position as a regional hub for innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship through new infrastructure and structural development.

Initial efforts focused on territorial development via the launch of the Centre of Entrepreneurship of Impact (CEI) ‘Nordeste In’, which provides incubation, mentorship, and workspaces for socially-oriented ventures across 13 municipalities. Concurrently, regional authorities monitored the progress of EU-funded projects, such as the Barcelos Collaborative Research and Innovation Centre (B-CRIC), to bolster research-industry links and prepare for future European funding cycles.

Building on these developments, the region—particularly the Porto Metropolitan Area—has emerged as a highly competitive European investment hub. This economic consolidation is driven by a diverse business ecosystem, high-quality human resources, and leading universities. While the region faces ongoing challenges regarding energy and digital transitions, it maintains resilience through strong export capacity and its growing status as a center for technology, industry, and cutting-edge research.
