Economic cost increases in Germany
Overview
Germany is experiencing rising costs across multiple sectors. In the hospitality industry, restaurant prices have increased by an average of 36 percent since 2019, with one-third of analyzed menu items seeing hikes of at least 50 percent. Despite a planned VAT reduction for restaurant meals in 2026, many establishments have maintained or increased prices to offset expenses related to food, energy, rent, and personnel.
Simultaneously, childcare fees are rising in regions like Baden-Württemberg. This trend is driven by higher personnel costs following public service collective bargaining agreements and inflation in material and energy costs. Municipalities are passing these expenses to parents to manage budget deficits.
In the cleaning industry, the IG BAU union is engaged in ongoing wage disputes across several regions, including Lippe, Celle, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Bavaria, and Märkischer Kreis. The union is demanding an hourly increase of 2 euros to reach a rate of 17 euros per hour, arguing that current employer offers—such as a proposed 1.8 percent increase—are insufficient to combat inflation and the physically demanding nature of the work.
In the Märkischer Kreis alone, approximately 3,530 employees and 57 companies are affected. Union representatives warn that failing to reach a fair agreement could exacerbate labor shortages and high turnover rates. The next round of collective bargaining negotiations between the IG BAU and the Federal Guild Association of the Building Cleaning Trade is scheduled for November 3.
