Economic crime investigations in Croatia
Overview
Authorities in Croatia have launched investigations into separate cases of economic crime involving business owners in Zadar and Dubrovnik.
In Zadar, a 55-year-old entrepreneur is under investigation for allegedly failing to calculate and pay value-added tax (VAT) on invoices exceeding 167,000 euros between May and September 2023. The Zadar Police Administration reports that the failure to submit monthly VAT returns allegedly caused a state budget loss of 19,249.17 euros.
In Dubrovnik, a 40-year-old female business owner faces allegations of economic crimes causing material damage exceeding 1.2 million euros. Between mid-June 2021 and mid-July 2025, the suspect allegedly operated a hospitality establishment while failing to issue fiscalized receipts to avoid VAT and profit tax. The investigation also includes allegations of customs evasion, abuse of trust, and the non-payment of mandatory social security contributions for 69 employees, which deprived them of pension and health insurance rights.
