As part of the ‘Eskişehir Year’ initiative, the city planned a city-wide retail discount campaign involving voluntary participation from various sectors, including food, clothing, and technical services. The program, supported by the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality and the Chamber of Commerce, aimed to bolster the local economy through discounts ranging from 5% to 50%. Concurrently, rising living costs have driven residents toward second-hand markets. Local weekly markets have seen increased activity, with a significant surge in demand for electronics as citizens seek affordable alternatives to new products. This trend toward a second-hand economy is further supported by digital platforms and a growing consumer focus on budget management and waste reduction. Recent observations suggest a decline in commercial activity within the retail sector. Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ reported a 50 percent drop in business at shopping malls compared to the previous year, noting that while malls remain crowded, visitors are increasingly using them as social spaces rather than for shopping. Özdağ estimated that only about 150 out of every 1,000 visitors engage in actual transactions. Adding to the debate, former AK Party council member Murat Özcan suggested the city is being viewed as a “consumption hub rather than a production center.” He noted that even small storefronts are increasingly being occupied by national chains instead of local merchants.
