Ecopetrol operational and financial challenges

Overview

Ecopetrol has faced significant commercial and financial pressures in Colombia. In October, the company canceled its procurement processes for importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) after failing to secure suitable commercial terms. The company noted that international gas volumes lacked sufficient backing from domestic market purchase commitments, making the contracts a significant financial risk.

By November, the company reported a potential liquidity crisis stemming from a tax dispute with the National Tax and Customs Directorate (Dian). The dispute involves Value Added Tax (IVA) on imported gasoline from 2022 to 2025. Ecopetrol warned that if the Dian imposes an embargo of 16.4 trillion pesos, the firm could be left with enough resources to operate for only 23 days, potentially leading to insolvency and impacting thousands of employees and contractors.
