ECOWAS ECO single-currency rollout

In late July 2026, ECOWAS reaffirmed its plan to introduce the regional single currency, the ECO, in 2027. Leaders at the 69th ordinary session in Sierra Leone outlined a phased adoption, initially limited to states meeting convergence criteria on fiscal deficits, inflation, public debt and foreign‑exchange reserves. The summit also addressed security concerns, condemning rising banditry in northern Nigeria and planning a counter‑terrorism brigade by July 2027.

Four days later, ECOWAS again confirmed the 2027 launch, emphasizing the need for macro‑economic convergence and noting the departure of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the bloc. The announcement highlighted the expected benefits of reduced transaction costs, greater investment, and financial stability for a market of over 400 million people and a combined GDP above $800 billion. The statement also referenced parallel single‑currency efforts by the East African Community, underscoring broader regional interest in monetary integration despite ongoing challenges.
