Overview

In late July 2026 the ECOWAS Parliament in Cotonou called on member states to formalise the largely informal MSME sector, improve productivity and link firms to regional value chains under Vision 2050 and the AfCFTA. A follow‑up session warned that states that fail to implement existing MSME‑support policies could face sanctions, citing bottlenecks experienced by a pineapple‑juice producer at borders with Nigeria and Ghana. Parliamentarians pledged to work with national lawmakers to remove trade barriers, formalise the informal sector and expand financing, including cooperation with the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development.

On 29 July ECOWAS announced Benin as a regional benchmark for SME support, highlighting the 2020 SME law, the 2022 agency for SME development and a funding package of more than 22 billion CFA francs. The same week a two‑day forum in Abuja launched a gender‑parity initiative, with the ECOWAS commission’s vice‑president declaring a historic commitment to achieve political gender parity by 2035. Nigerian officials pledged reforms to the Special Reserved Seats Bill and the Abuja Action Agenda.

On 31 July the Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Program (EYWEP) was launched in Dakar, backed by AUDA‑NEPAD and Spain’s AECID, to provide capacity‑building, mentoring, networking and financing for young and women entrepreneurs in pilot countries, reinforcing the broader agenda for inclusive growth.
