Ecuador will observe a national holiday on Monday, 10 August 2026, to mark the First Cry of Independence, creating a three-day weekend from 8–10 August. Authorities have deployed over 57,000 police officers, drones, aircraft, and patrol units to monitor roads, terminals, beaches, and tourist sites. In Tungurahua, 600 officers have been specifically assigned to protect citizens and tourists in strategic locations. Additionally, Quito’s “Pico y Placa” traffic restriction is suspended for the day. Travel promoters expect approximately 243,000 inter-provincial bus passengers, with major transportation hubs like Guayaquil preparing for high traffic volumes. Local festivities in Guayaquil and Quito are expected to feature concerts, cultural tours, and gastronomic events. Popular destinations include coastal areas such as Playas, Montañita, Santa Elena, and Manta, as well as inland locations like Cuenca and the Quilotoa crater lake. In the Quilotoa community, hotels are reported to be fully booked through 12 August. In addition to the national break, a four-day holiday (7–10 August) has been approved for nine cantons: Portovelo, Buena Fe, Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola, Loreto, Nabón, Nobol, Shushufindi, Cuyabeno, and Sigchos. Provincial tourism activities are scaling up, notably in Pastaza, which will host 22 events, including an Afro Fest and the distribution of 3,000 ceviche portions. Regional tourism context remains high, as neighboring countries also observe August holidays, such as Peru's celebrations on 6 and 30 August.
