Ecuador auto sales surge

In the first half of 2026, Ecuador (along with Chile) posted record growth in automobile sales, marking a significant expansion of the national vehicle market.

By mid‑2025, Ecuador's electric‑vehicle segment had already experienced a dramatic jump, with more than 4,200 EVs sold—a rise of over 200 % from the previous year. The range of available models grew from about 25 in 2023 to roughly 80 in 2025, reflecting heightened consumer and manufacturer interest. Industry attention is shifting toward next‑generation battery technologies, such as solid‑state cells and advanced Battery Management Systems, aimed at delivering longer ranges and faster charging.

A July 2025 survey by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC) showed that 10.3 million Ecuadorians, or 59.3 % of the population aged five and older, owned a smartphone, with higher ownership in urban areas and among more educated or affluent groups. While the survey focuses on mobile device use, it underscores broader socioeconomic trends that may support the growing uptake of advanced vehicles.
