Ecuador international trade and energy initiatives

Ecuador is actively pursuing international economic cooperation, specifically focusing on energy and trade relations with Panama and Japan.

President Daniel Noboa and Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino have discussed the possibility of Ecuador purchasing surplus electricity from Panama. This initiative faces technical hurdles due to the lack of a shared border, which would necessitate a regional interconnection network. The two nations are also establishing terms to negotiate a Partial Scope Agreement and discussing labor migration for Ecuadorian workers in Panama’s agricultural and fishing sectors.

Simultaneously, Ecuador is advancing negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Japan to strengthen trade in sectors such as mining and crude oil. This effort is supported by the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (FEDEXPOR), which recently hosted diplomatic representatives from Japan and the European Union to showcase the country’s export potential in products like roses and broccoli. These activities aim to consolidate existing markets and explore new trade opportunities to bolster Ecuadorian exports.
