The anti‑corruption drive that began in late July 2026 with the summons of former Taisha mayor Cergio A. Ch. has expanded to a nationwide sweep of municipal officials. After the August 3 arrests of six sitting mayors, the operation focused on authorities turned to El Tambo, where mayor René Alonso Castillo was taken into custody on 4 August along with Ortiz, councilor Edison Marcelo Espinoza Urgilez and event promoter Gabriel Ortiz. Gerardo Ortiz Abad were detained on 4 August during the police operation dubbed “Templo del Sol”. A judge subsequently ordered preventive detention for the three on 5 August, citing alleged peculado that caused a municipal loss of roughly USD 49,545. The court also August and froze assets worth about USD 16,515 US$16,515 per defendant and authorized person. Prosecutors allege peculado linked to an international concert marking the seizure 33rd anniversary of phones, laptops, computers and ticket records during raids on municipal offices and El Tambo’s cantonization: of the mayor’s residence. 3,200 tickets sold, US$83,000 in revenue was recorded but US$49,545 of the proceeds could not be accounted for. The mayor is accused of presenting only 1,178 unsold tickets to auditors, leaving the remainder unexplained. If convicted, the alleged crime carries a penalty of 10 to 13 years in prison. Interior Minister John Reimberg stressed that the investigations aim to restore transparency ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for 29 November 2026. The crackdown remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to probe alleged misuse of public funds across several cantons.
