Overview

In July 2026 Ecuador’s rising suicide toll was highlighted, with 5,468 deaths recorded between 2019‑2023 and a disproportionate impact on men, older adults and adolescents. Reports stressed that early warning signs often went unnoticed by families, workplaces and the health system, prompting calls for stronger preventive strategies.

A week later the government responded by publishing a 93‑page Manual for the First Intervention in Suicide Attempts. Signed by the Ministry of Public Health and six other agencies, the manual gives standardized protocols for police, firefighters, paramedics and by‑standers, covering psychological first aid, persuasion techniques, safety measures, communication and referral pathways. Authorities plan a nine‑month rollout to train responders and raise public awareness, aiming to reduce the more than 1,000 annual deaths.
