Ecuadorian banana exports to the Middle East have shown significant growth, with the region becoming the country’s third largest export market. Through August 2026, the Middle East accounted for approximately 14% to 15.55% of total banana shipments, surpassing the United States in market share. Growth in this region is supported by a free trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates, which provides duty-free access to the Persian Gulf. Turkey and Saudi Arabia have emerged as the primary entry points and largest regional buyers, with Turkey and Saudi Arabia seeing substantial increases in shipments. By September 2026, total banana exports reached 312.41 million boxes, a 9.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. While the European Union remains the primary destination at 32.38%, other major markets include Russia at 19.83% and the Middle East at 15.5%. Significant growth was also noted in specific European markets, including Finland, Denmark, and France. However, José Antonio Hidalgo, Executive President of the Association of Ecuadorian Banana Exporters (AEBE), noted that while volumes have grown, the market value of bananas has fallen by 20% over the last 15 years. The AEBE is working to ensure international prices reflect production costs, environmental protections, and fair wages. While the banana sector expands, the cocoa industry faces domestic challenges. Economic pressures on cocoa exports, which reached $485 million through August 2026, are being driven by domestic electricity shortages. The National Association of Cocoa Exporters of Ecuador (Anecacao) reported that power outages are increasing operational costs, as companies must rely on diesel and electric generators to maintain production.
