Ecuadorian airports have implemented scheduled runway maintenance to ensure operational safety. On September 5, Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito suspended runway operations for several hours, resulting in the rescheduling of 31 domestic and international flights. Following this, on September 22, the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil also scheduled a runway closure for maintenance work. Authorities at the Guayaquil terminal indicated the measure was intended to “preserve operational safety,” advising passengers to coordinate with airlines regarding potential rescheduling. On October 3, 2026, Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito scheduled another 12-hour suspension of all flight operations, running from 02:00 to 14:00 local time, for preventive runway maintenance. This intervention marks the ninth of ten planned maintenance sessions for the year intended to preserve infrastructure and ensure safety. While flight operations are halted, the passenger terminal will remain open. The airport administrator, Quiport, stated that airlines were notified in advance to adjust schedules and communicate changes to travelers. The maintenance affects domestic and international routes, including connections to Panama, Bogota, Buenos Aires, El Salvador, New York, Mexico, and various cities within Ecuador.
