Ecuadorian cinematic works and training initiatives are gaining visibility through international film festivals and domestic workshops. In August 2026, the documentary ‘Nosotras’, which focuses on women in the Guayaquil Social Rehabilitation Center, was selected for the 35th Biarritz Amérique Latine festival in France and the 25th EDOC. Additionally, the GENERAMMA film festival announced its short film lineup, featuring international and Spanish selections. By late August, the feature film ‘Nunkui’, a co-production involving Ecuador, Chile, and Germany, was set to compete at the Bariloche Film Festival in Argentina. Domestically, the KunturñawiLab documentary laboratory was scheduled to take place in Riobamba to produce short documentaries centered on local historical memory. In September 2026, these training initiatives yielded tangible results. In Riobamba, 25 participants of the IV Kunturñawi Lab completed their program, producing three documentary shorts: ‘Mama Valeriana Anaguarqui’, ‘El Último Hojalatero’, and ‘Visibilizar lo invisible’. These films, covering themes such as Andean wisdom, traditional craftsmanship, and animal abandonment, are slated for the XV Kunturñawi Ecuadorian Film Festival. Simultaneously, the ‘Mi Propia Peli’ project in Guayaquil, part of the Cultura en Movimiento program, presented four short films inspired by local legends. Filmed at heritage sites including the Municipal Museum, Municipal Jail, and Municipal Cemetery, the initiative seeks to preserve cultural history through student and citizen participation. By late September 2026, the EDOC International Documentary Film Festival marked its 25th anniversary. Held in Quito and Guayaquil, the festival features a selection of 71 national and international films, including premieres, colloquiums, and a photographic exhibition. The event opened with the documentary ‘A Fox Under a Pink Moon’, which follows the life of Soraya Akhlaghi.
