Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visits Athens and Rome

Overview

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has extended support to Pope Leo XIV following the Pope’s surgical procedure at Agostino Gemelli Hospital in Rome on October 13. The Patriarch expressed hope for a rapid recovery and emphasized the existing bonds of communication between the two leaders.

Following celebrations marking his 35 years of patriarchy, Bartholomew conducted high-level visits to Athens and Rome. In Athens, he met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion to discuss pending issues regarding the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Greek minority in Turkey, specifically the reopening of the Halki Theological School. Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece's support for the Patriarchate's rights and religious freedoms.

In Rome, the Patriarch was named an honorary Doctor of Theology at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). During the ceremony, which was attended by high-ranking Vatican officials and various international ambassadors, he delivered a lecture titled “Synodality and Society in the Church.”

In a separate engagement, Patriarch Bartholomew visited Bulgaria to commemorate the anniversaries of Saint Ivan of Rila. During a liturgy at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, Bartholomew and Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria offered prayers for peace and the unity of the Orthodox Churches. The visit included attending an exhibition on Mount Athos, where Bartholomew emphasized the necessity of maintaining “open channels of communication between Orthodox Churches.”
