The German Federal Cartel Office has approved Edeka’s acquisition of 178 Tegut supermarket locations, following the Swiss cooperative Migros’s decision to sell the chain in March. Edeka stated that the acquisition secures approximately 3,700 jobs and maintains local supply chains, noting that the regulator conducted a rigorous review of regional markets. The Tegut brand is expected to be phased out as stores are integrated into the Edeka cooperative system or potentially rebranded under Netto Marken-Discount.
Despite the approval, the Monopolkommission has raised concerns regarding market concentration. President Tomaso Duso warned that the disappearance of Tegut as an independent retailer could disadvantage consumers and suppliers, noting that the ‘big four’ retailers—Edeka, Rewe, Aldi, and the Schwarz Group—already control over 90 percent of the German food retail market.
