Edeka shrinkflation allegations regarding tea products

Overview

The consumer protection organization Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg has flagged Edeka’s private label tea brand, Gut & Günstig, for alleged shrinkflation. The agency noted that varieties such as ‘Italian Lemon’ and ‘Mediterranean Peach’ saw content reductions from 62.5 grams to 50 grams, with tea bag counts decreasing from 25 to 20.

While the consumer group reported that the price remained at 1.69 euros—representing a 25 percent effective price increase per unit—Edeka defended the changes. The retailer stated the adjustment was a “market-standard adjustment of packaging and offering concepts” necessitated by a transition from un-enveloped tea bags to individually wrapped paper-enveloped bags. Edeka further claimed that the manufacturer's suggested retail price was simultaneously reduced from 1.69 euros to 1.39 euros.
