Eden Prairie high school homecoming shooting and security

Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were shot in the parking lot outside Aerie Stadium during an Eden Prairie High School homecoming football game against Minnetonka. The incident occurred following a large altercation and caused thousands of spectators to evacuate the stadium in panic. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries to their lower extremities. While the 18-year-old was discharged from the hospital, the 17-year-old remained hospitalized. Law enforcement officials indicated the shooting was likely targeted and related to conflict between local Somali immigrant gangs. The victims were known to police but were not students at the involved high schools. In the aftermath, the school principal cancelled the scheduled homecoming dance, noting that holding it so soon after the trauma would feel “out of place.” The postponed football game was eventually completed the following morning, with Eden Prairie winning 20-14. Adam Abdihakeem Adam, an 18-year-old from St. Louis Park, was arrested in connection with the shooting and held at the Hennepin County Jail on probable cause for second-degree assault. He faces charges of two counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and one count of second-degree riot. On October 10, Adam was released from jail after posting a $100,000 bond option that carried no conditions. Following Adam’s release, authorities issued arrest warrants for four other men—Musab Ibrahim Aden, Omar Adan Abdullahi, Abdirahman Ahmed Jama, and Mahamed Ali Haji—charging them with third-degree riot. The incident has fueled political debate regarding Minnesota’s bail and crime policies. Gubernatorial candidates Lisa Demuth and Amy Klobuchar have both responded to the violence, with Demuth calling for a statewide gang task force and Klobuchar proposing a regional task force. Following a second shooting on October 5 outside a Speedway gas station, Eden Prairie city and school officials implemented enhanced security protocols.
