Edin Džeko, the longtime captain and all-time leading scorer for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team, has officially retired from international competition. The 40-year-old striker, often referred to as ‘Diamond’, concluded his career following a 1:1 draw against Sweden in a UEFA Nations League Group B4 fixture at Bilino Polje in Zenica on October 2, 2026. Džeko, who earned 152 appearances and 73 goals, holds the national records for both caps and scoring. Following his retirement, a signed jersey worn by Džeko during his final match against Sweden was put up for charity auction. Organized by the association Pomozi.ba with Džeko’s consent, the jersey features a custom design with diamond motifs instead of the traditional federation crest. The auction concluded on October 14, with the jersey selling for 95,100 KM to an anonymous buyer. The proceeds will be donated to the ‘Sportisti za život’ (Athletes for Life) fund, co-founded by ~~Džeko,~~ Džeko and Mirza Teletovic, to provide medical assistance to citizens in need. The retirement also drew significant attention through the viral story of seven-year-old Uroš Preradović from Banja Luka. After Uroš created a drawing depicting Džeko praying for a chance to play again, the artwork amassed millions of views online. While Džeko initially responded with a personal video message and arranged for the boy to attend a match, the family has since faced intense pressure from toxic social media comments. Uroš’s mother, Maja Preradović, reported experiencing health issues due to the online backlash and has issued statements defending her family’s resilience against the negativity.
