Education insecurity in Mali and Benin

Overview

Insecurity and terrorist threats have caused widespread school closures across parts of Mali and Benin. In Mali, instability in the South, Center, and North has forced families to relocate children to ensure safety, with many institutions remaining non-functional due to village displacements. In Benin, government spokesperson Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji confirmed that schools along northern borders were closed as a preventative measure against unpredictable attacks from across the borders.

By June 2026, the education crisis in Mali intensified, with 2,444 schools reported as non-functional, affecting approximately 733,200 children and 14,604 teachers. This figure represents a 20% increase in closures compared to 2025. The instability is most concentrated in the Kidal, Gao, and Mopti regions, where the number of closed schools has reached a five-year high.
