Overview

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has conducted significant debt recovery operations involving major oil companies in Nigeria.

Initially, following an audit by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the EFCC recovered substantial statutory levies owed to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Investigations into 43 companies revealed significant liabilities, resulting in the release of approximately ₦73.37 billion and $67.07 million to the NDDC. While the Niger Delta Development Monitoring Group (NIDDEMOG) commended these efforts, critics have called for transparency to ensure funds are used for sustainable development rather than political patronage.

In a separate recovery effort, the EFCC facilitated a US$60 million payment from Nestoil Limited to a consortium of creditor banks. This payment follows an investigation into the criminal aspects of transactions between the company and its lenders. Lenders have indicated that this amount is only the first phase of a structured repayment plan, as a substantial portion of the debt remains outstanding.
